1. What is the Medfield Adult Community Center (MACC)?
  • Companionship and stimulation for seniors to prevent isolation and foster wellness in body and mind
  • Social services to support senior independence
  • Assistance for families and caregivers
  • Additional space for adult community, public and private group meetings and functions.

2. What is the size of Medfield’s senior population?

Seniors (residents 60 years or older) compromise 1,750 residents. Residents btween 50 and 60 comprise another 1,750 residents. This total of 3,500 residents 50 and older comprise 28% of the towns residents.

3. What is the problem with continuing to use the Pfaff Center?

Seniors have only one room and share a second room with school programs. The space severely limits the number of programs that can be offered

Sharing space with energetic young children poses a significant risk of injury to seniors, who can be unsteady on their feet.

4. What will the MACC be like?

It will be 8,000 square feet, single story.

It will feature:

  • multi-purpose room for exercise sessions, dining and other programs
  • rooms for classes, crafts, computers, games
  • offices for staff and health services
  • kitchen
  • parking spaces

5. Where will the center be located?

On three-and-a-half acres on Marvin Road, land set aside by the town in 2001

6. What will the MACC cost to build?

$2.8 million over 20 years, with a debt exclusion override. $2 million was approved overwhelmingly by Town Meeting in 2004, and additional $800,000 is required to meet rising construction costs.

Tax impact will be an increase of 13 cents per thousand of assessed value, or roughly $70 / year for the house with the average assessed value of $518,360. The tax burden is removed completely after 20 years.

A fee will be imposed on public and private groups for using the facility, which will help offset the cost of building and maintaining the center

6. When will it be built?

The Warrant for the approval of funds will be put to a vote at Town Meeting on April 24. Upon approval, the proposed center will be put on the ballot for the town’s vote in May or June. The bidding process should be complete and construction starting in Fall 2006.If construction begins soon, t The facility will be ready in 2007.
